Through a Glass, Darkly is Now Available

Friends, readers, countrymen!

Our irreverent book about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the spiritualists is being published by St. Martins Press June 13!  Through A Glass, Darkly, written by Stefan Bechtel (me),  with my old pal Larry Stains, is all about the sort of do-it-yourself religion that attracted millions of adherents between the Civil War and around 1930,  with the hope of reaching across the veil of death to make contact with the departed.  Naturally there was plenty of fraud afoot, but we concluded the truth is much more interesting than that.  Despite all the flimflam,  some of the material that came through trance mediums and automatic writing is eerily difficult to dismiss.  Plus there’s the famous fights between Doyle and Houdini, weird levitations,  amazing manifestations,  naked gunfights – well, no naked gunfights – which all adds up to a “terrific read,” as one reviewer put it.

Now we’re humbly asking you – er, abjectly begging you, actually – to buy a book on Amazon and then post a review.  (Sorry, you have to buy a book in order for the review to be posted.)  It’s the best way to get the word out about our book without busting the bank.  Hope you’ll help us out – and

hope you enjoy the book!
